Felted wool tableaus are made using a sharp needle to fuse the top wool together into images and text. The image orginates with a film, selected from several stills that provide solace or escape. The series developed following major life shifts. The softness of the wool and the sharp, repetition of the felting provide respite.
In a 1961 Vogue article Joan Didion wrote: “There is a common superstition that self-respect is a kind of charm against snakes.”
If snakes are life’s disappointments and bruises, it took me into my 40s to develop the ability to adjust my expectations and to understand that it is timing and repetitiveness that make a master, not innate talent or luck. I am also learning that our sole purpose can be to hold regular tasks and to enjoy them. To evolve in the dignity of moving through life as a regular person; to have good friends and to enjoy the moments with the beloved people in your life.
The soft and luxurious wool represents life’s matter. I am capturing moments that hold charm.
